Kickstart your day when you have acne

A morning routine should be tailored to you: your needs, your wants, and your likes.

What do you need in the morning – a cup of coffee or a green smoothie?

How do you feel in your body and mind, when you wake up?

What helps you get ready to rock’n roll the day?

You know this: what you do in the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Especially when you have acne…

Because let’s be honest here: acne absolutely sucks.

And when even a simple look in the mirror can throw us out of balance, it is necessary to learn to take care of ourselves, from the very moment we open our eyes.

So check out these powerful ways to kickstart your morning for an awesome day 🙂

Tip #1 – Avoid the Mirror

Ah, the mirror.

It is easily your worst enemy when you have acne.

If you are prone to feel your face (or other areas of your body) for new pimples right when you wake up, and run to the bathroom to see how bad it really is, cover the mirror – before you start popping and squeezing your skin!

… Which is a sure way of making you feel even worse.

Instead, give some TLC to your body by doing your usual natural skin and make-up routine.

Then, leave it alone for the rest of the day.

And trust your body that it is doing its absolute best to heal itself.

Tip #2 – Don’t Switch on your Phone until after Breakfast

No matter whether the first thing you do in the morning is boil the kettle or get ready for a run, there is one thing that you should absolutely avoid: check your phone.

We all do it.

I personally do it, because I want to check the messages that my family has sent me during the night (they live on the other side of the world).

But on my way, I get distracted by my personal AND professional inbox, random app notifications… and worst of all, my Facebook newsfeed.

Goodness, the absolute worst is when I turn on my phone right when I wake up.

Checking your phone for the first 60-90 minutes of your morning is a sure way of making you feel overwhelmed (“OMG, I have so much stuff to do today”), and frustrated (“My friend with perfect complexion posted yet another selfie on FB… I’ll never be able to do the same”).

The morning might be the only moment during the day when you’re by yourself.

It is a precious time, which you just can’t waste on your phone.

So, leave your phone in a different room during the night. If you rely on it to wake you up (alarm), put it somewhere that you can’t reach when you’re still in bed.

And wait until after breakfast to turn it on. Your inbox will have to wait!

Tip #3 – Nourish Yourself

This had to be on the list 🙂

If you’ve been following The Love Vitamin for a while, you know that changing your diet can be crucial for clear skin.

So, when you wake up, drink plenty of water to flush the toxins out of your body.

And allow yourself 20 minutes for a light to moderate physical activity in the morning.

This might mean dance to your feel-good song in your living room, or park the car far away enough from work or school, so that you can take a nice walk.

Tip #4 – Take Some Time Off

Before you start rushing into your day’s activities, take some time to do nothing.

That might mean meditation, journalling, cuddling the cat.

If you want to give the “do-nothing” thing a try, while still feeling like you’re achieving something, I got your back.

The following practice is especially useful when you feel like ‘Arggggggh this is never going to end’. It goes like this:

Lie down on a bed or on the floor (or in the grass!).

Notice your breathing, and start to slow it down.

When you feel calm, notice the bed, the floor, the Earth supporting you.

See how it feels on your legs, arms, back, bottom, shoulders, head.

Notice how tense or relaxed your muscles are. Just notice.

Then, take a deep, full, long deep breath in. Hold your breath, and squeeze every single muscle in your body, from the tip of the toes to your forehead.

Hold your breath… And let everything go.

Release every bit of resistance, and allow yourself to be supported by the bed, the floor, the Earth beneath you.

Repeat this two more times… And feel yourself getting heavier.

Fully supported.

When you are ready, open your eyes.

I like to do this once every day, or every time I feel like the world is going against me.

Tip #5 – Allow Yourself To Be With Your Feelings

This is a huge one for me.

I spent soooo much of my time as an acne warrior feeling guilty and hopeless.

Girl crying while pressing a pimple on her chin with a grey background

Guilty because I allowed my body to become so unhealthy that my face was covered in cysts.

Guilty because I couldn’t share how I truly felt (crap) with my soon-to-be husband.

Hopeless because I felt yet another pimple just under the surface of my skin.

Hopeless because I felt like I would never, ever heal.

Hopeless when I looked at a picture of myself posted by a friend on social media. Myself + pimples. Yay.

Acne can make us feel sad, angry, upset, hurt.

And the longer we ignore those feelings, or push them down, the longer they fester, and the bigger they grow.

So, in the morning, acknowledge how you feel. Journal it, or say it out loud (or even scream it), if that helps you.

And release it.

Refuse to let your feelings or spots ruin your day.

Move on!
