Do you ever find that you when you get acne breakouts, you choose to dress “less nicely” than you would otherwise?
Some people get so down on themselves that they feel like there is no point in trying to look good – almost as though they feel phony for taking pride in their appearance when they have acne spots.
In this video, I am letting you know why it’s a bad idea to do this and why you should make an effort to wear clothing that makes you feel good and sexy – acne or not!

Do you ever find yourself “dressing down” when you break out?

great point!! I do that a little bit – ie a tshirt and jeans versus cute blouse and cardigan.
I found an interesting blog, CaveGirlEats (paleo diet, but includes natural beauty n’ stuff) that you might be intersted in. Here is the link to a post from her on how she cleared up a weird jawline breakout: http://cavegirleats.com/2011/04/27/wap-me-pretty/
I can’t remember what you mentioned about a natural deodorant in your previous post, but she found that a baking soda + coconut oil = fabulously effective: http://cavegirleats.com/2011/04/29/the-stank-has-left-the-building/
ok I’ll stop stealing your thunder now 😛
Cool! Thanks for the tips Lily! 🙂
Dressing down is definitely related to the self-loathing and trying to disappear thing when you get a breakout.
I remember in high school I would always wear lots of hoodies and sweaters and try to be as forgetful (forgetful isn’t really the right word. more like trying not to disturb the natural balance of things) as possible. I was basically trying to blend into the walls and desks of school until I met someone that made me realize I had a decent personality and I should showcase it more.
I can definitely understand why I did it and why others do it – it’s to avoid any more attention being paid to our faces than we already think is being paid to them. When you have a zit it feels like the whole school knows you have that zit. But when you have that zit and you are wearing red or lime green, it feels like the whole city knows you have that zit.
It just solidifies the fact that people need to solve their underlying personal issues if they ever want to be clear, because stress is a biological response.
Are you spying on me?
This just happened today! My face has been so sensitive lately I haven’t been able to put makeup on at all.. It’s SO red and irritated, and I was standing at my closet, before my husband and I went out, and I said, “What’s the point?” I wore an ugly sweatshirt. It’s depressing, and something I should work on. It DOES feel phony to wear my nice clothes when my face looks to dreadful. Having a few zits is one thing, but having something that looks like a raw rash on both sides of your face is a bit different. I do see people looking at it. Did I really want to put on a lace top and wear some attractive boots? No, I didn’t. I should have anyway, but it was next to impossible with how bad this breakout continues to be. I used to do a lot of modelling for fun, and this complete absence of my former attractiveness is something I grapple with every day..
http://www.ascendingstorm.com/html/taylor/taylorphotography.htm I never had to worry about it before, and it has completely changed my life and my view of myself. I know I’ll come out stronger, but I’ve lost a lot of what made me a “free-spirit”.
I think you explained it perfectly! I love your pictures. I know you’re still beautiful.
Feeling beautiful is what its all about, and its that’s hard when ….. well you know. :/ I wish you positive energy.
I am also sending you light and love Taylor! I felt the same way … losing that spirit is sometimes the hardest part. You are a beautiful person and I know that you’ll get through this
This is so true! Whenever I have a bad breakout I never wear my super nice clothes because I’m afraid that they will attract people, and I don’t want them looking at my pimple 🙁
It’s understandable, but I think the more confidence we exude (and fake it till you make it) will cause people to not care about the pimple more than wearing dumpy clothing will hide it!
This video was so cute and I like your jeans!
Thanks Cathy! 🙂
Hey, do you have any advice for what to do when you come off birth control? How can I balance out my body again without a severe breakout? I don’t want to go back on it, the idea of it makes me sick now. Any supplement ideas. Eating right and exercising weren’t nearly enough last time to help. This time I want to do it right? Anyone have any ideas?
It was just brought to my attention by someone that you may actually be able to wean off birth control pills and lessen the chances of a breakout that way… I didn’t suggest that before because I didn’t think it would work, but I may do a video about it soon.
I would probably be the person to do this, but my job has a dress code that requires me to look presentable, so 5 days a week, I’m in dress pants or a skirt, a nice top, and a pair of cute flats. And I have to say, it really is true that when I dress in something nice/something I like, I always feel way prettier (even when my skin looks like hell) than if I’m wearing old clothes that don’t fit.
It’s even gotten to the point that I still dress decently on days off, even if I’m just going to be lounging around and doing nothing, because I always feel so much better about myself.
Definitely… I always feel worse and just way dumpier if I go around the house in pj’s and sweatshirts… even if you don’t feel it, sometimes it just feels better to get presentable.
Great video!! I have a somewhat unrelated question, but I couldn’t find an email address, so here I am. What do you use to remove eye makeup? I know you wash your face with raw honey; does it work as an eye makeup remover as well? Eye shadow and mascara is pretty much the only makeup I wear, but I’m very cautious about what I put near my eyes (for obvious reasons).
Thanks for all the hard work you put into your blog and videos! I can tell you spend a lot of time on them, and really care about getting good information out there.
Thanks Alyssa!
I would suggest using jojoba oil! its all natural and removes eye makeup well!
