As you may know, allergies and acne are intricately linked.
The skin on my face has been really good lately, but I have had a major flare up of eczema on my hand (and toes)… so I decided to head back to the naturopath for a food allergy and sensitivity test to see what may be contributing to my dry, itchy, cracking skin before it spread to my face!
In the past I have been hesitant to reveal my personal allergies to avoid mass hysteria, but I`ve decided this time I can share! Watch the video to find out what the test revealed.

I’m so interested in having electro acupuncture done for myself. I’ve been on a strict paleo diet for the past three months (for me, no nuts and diary) until last month when I decided to incorporate whole non glutenous grains and legumes back into my diet. I soaked, sprouted and cooked everything to decrease the bad in these foods. After eating these foods for a few days my face broke out in a ton of closed comedones. Three weeks later I now sit here with cystic acne. Sigh, and my face was clear. I feel like I prepared the grains and legumes as best as I could. I even portioned out my servings so my meal had a low glycemic load. Very weird. There must be something in them that my body doesn’t agree with. This coming week is going to be my first week back on paleo. I wish you well on your mini cleansing. I can’t wait to see what else you come up with.
Oh wow… I’m so sorry you are so sensitive to the carbohydrates, or the lectins, or the phytic acid, or whatever it is in the non paleo food that isn’t agreeing with you :/ Good luck with going back to the strict paleo… and yes I would suggest getting an electroacupuncture test done because maybe it can give you some clues!
Aw, thanks. As you were saying, it just goes to show that food sensitivities are wildly different from person when it comes to acne. I just sent an e-mail inquiring about a consultation in my area so we’ll see how it goes. Thanks for all you do!
Tracy, if you have a spare moment I have a quick question. Is “muscle testing” a reliable way to find out food sensitives? The wellness center I e-mailed said electro-acupuncture is only used for pain and immune system boosting and said they can find food sensitivities through “muscle testing”.
Yes muscle testing is a reliable way to check for allergies, and it’s a very common method with naturopaths and health practitioners that don’t have the machines. I say go for it!
This is to E, but a lot of times when you remove foods from your diet for too long you can have an allergic type of reaction to a food that originally wasn’t bad for you. Your body becomes sensitive to it because you removed it for so long. Thats why i don’t personally like paleo diets or really strict candida ones. I know it helps a lot of people with acne, but I learned my lesson when i went to the extreme with it. Everything in moderation for me. Thats just my personal opinion, but you might want to look into it as a reason you are possibly breaking out.
Also I’ve been wanting to get an allergy test for awhile, but I’m afraid it will make me even more paranoid about foods. Congrats on overcoming a lot of your food allergies though. Have you actually incorporated those foods you were once allergic to back into your diet or do you still keep them out?
Sarah, thanks for your thoughts. I definitely think what you are saying could be the case. What I should have done was reintroduce those foods in very small amounts and one at a time. I’ll have to do it next time. In the meantime, I’m going to look further into why I had and have had such a bad reaction. Your everything in moderation motto is a good one.
Hmm .. so after I get an allergy test and for example it says I’m not allergic to milk, can I drink milk again and it won’t cause acne? (same with any other test food?)
You shouldn’t be drinking milk period in my opinion. Just because something won’t give you acne, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.
Cigarettes don’t break me out, but I avoid them because they’re obviously not good for me. See what I mean? 😛
Yes, I agree ^. i wouldn’t drink pasteurized milk ever, just because there are numerous other reasons aside from allergies that it’s bad for you. It’s the same with wheat and gluten… if you don’t have the actual allergy, it’s still very hard to digest and bad for your intestines, so it’s best to not eat it or minimize it. But getting the green light on the milk allergy means that you would probably do well with milk kefir made from organic pasteurized cow or goat’s milk, or even better, kefir made from raw milk.
I think the reasons you might be intolerant towards tomatoes is because they’re surprisingly really high in lectins.
I also hear garlic is great for candida in particular.
Ah yes, the lectins. I guess that’s why tomatoes are a common allergy :/
And yes, garlic is supposed to be great for candida!
Hey Tracy,
Quick question: if you take/drink probiotics regularly, will that keep your Candida in check–not banish but quell? The good bacteria should grow anyway, right? I started taking probiotics about a month ago and my acne has gotten soooooooo much better!
Hey Tamar… that’s great to hear that your acne has improved a ton since starting them! Technically I don’t think you have to take probiotics forever if you get your bacteria in balance… once it’s in balance, the good bacteria naturally keep the bad guys down unless you eat a really sugar diet or take antibiotics. But then again, with the general unavoidable chemicals in our air and water etc these days, which can be harmful to good bacterial colonies, I don’t think it would hurt to continue taking probiotics to make sure everything stays good in there!
Hey i was looking into this wellness center and they offer a bio-meridian testing that can show food allergies and well as the inflammation in your body. have you heard anything about it? whether or not its a reliable source to test for delayed reactions to foods.
Hi Saran,
yes bio-meridian testing is a good source for figuring out allergies… it’s pretty much the same test that I had done for checking out mine and I found it to be very helpful 🙂
