Hi everyone!
You probably know by now that I love using aloe vera on my face at night to keep down inflammation and get rid of acne scars.
I’ve been using Lily of the Dessert Organic 99% aloe gel for the last while. It seems to work well, but it does have some chemical preservatives in it, which I’d prefer it didn’t.
I’ve been on the hunt for so long for an aloe vera product that is pure and clean and works great, and I’ve finally found it! Check out the video for my review.

* Oh yeah, one last thing… since this aloe doesn’t contain intense preservatives, I’d recommend keeping it in the fridge so that it doesn’t go bad once you open it!

[..YouTube..] Have you considered vitacost.com for buying your natural products and supplements? All their products are discounted (for example, the AO Aloe Vera is $5.82). They also ship internationally. 🙂
No I haven’t! They’re so cheap though! That’s awesome, thanks for the tip!
I love the aloe juice because you can apply it on the skin and drink it and it’s supposed to be really good for you! It tastes horrid though, like a mother’s disapproval and bitter licorice or something.
Haha I’ve never actually tried drinking it.. I’ve heard it’s kind of nasty. But I hear it does wonders for healing the digestive tract, which is really important.
I’ve tried putting pure aloe vera juice (that you can drink as well) on my skin and it makes my skin really really red for a few hours.
Do you think that’s probably just b/c of it being too strong? I’ve tried the gel form before and it’s fine on me … so maybe this one will work fine.
i’ve also tried using it after going out in the sun but do you also use it as a sunblock by any chance?
Hmm I’m not sure exactly why the aloe juice would turn your skin bright red. I’ve heard you can use aloe vera straight from the plant as a sunscreen, but I’m not sure about processed aloe vera gel from a bottle. I’m interested to try it.
hmm okay, thanks! looking forward to more of your awesome videos 😀
Hey Tracy,
I’ve been using an aloe plant on my face for the past 4 days, so far im getting red tiny acne bumps..maybe its just pulling everything out? I will keep it up for two weeks and let you know how its working ( i give up on things very fast). hopefully it will work a little for me 🙂
Hi Danielle,
See how you go after two weeks… not everything works for everyone, but then again, some people’s skin just gets a little weird when they switch routines and its getting used to it.
okay i just got it — WOW it’s a small bottle! How long does it last you usually? (I bought it for about 6 bucks online for a 4 fl oz bottle …
To be honest, I’m not sure yet… I had been using the other kind, but I’m still working my way through my first bottle of the aubrey’s!
Hey, I know this is kind of an old article, but I just read it the other day and bought some of the Aubrey aloe vera. So far I really like it, except for the tiny size.
I was in a health food store today and noticed the variety of aloe juices they had for drinking. Some only had one ingredient: 100% organic aloe vera juice. I wonder if you can just put that on your face? It would be a terrific solution if it’s the same thing, because the ones I saw were like $11 for a HUGE bottle!
i tried using those huge bottles before (were they designed for drinking?) and it simply was too strong for some reason. It’s okay to drink but after applying my face was red for an hour or two. it sucked lol.
don’t worry, i’ve been using this for three months now and I still have some left, maybe enough for another month or so. It’s worth it. but then again, go ahead and try the big bottle if you want to – it can’t hurt, and if you don’t like it you can always drink it 🙂
Thanks Jeff! I haven’t tried the juice myself (for my face or to drink), so I appreciate that you knew the answer to that question! I seemed to recall you saying some time ago that it was way too strong..
I’ve used the juice as a toner. I like the gel after a shower. As for the plant, I have many. Tip: leave them alone in a sunny spot and they get humongous. If the leaves look flat, water. If the leaves are yellow, you overwatered. Unfortunately, though the fresh plant is awesome on a burn and even helped pain once when I smashed my finger, when I tried using the fresh plant on my face regularly, it was a bit irritating.
yeah, up a few posts on this very same page xD
ahahah… well there you go 🙂
how long did yours end up lasting tracy? i just ordered another bottle, but I probably still have enough for like 2 weeks. So it lasted around … 4 months!
Oh it’s lasted a long time… I still have a little bit… and I wrote this in… March! So yeah… four months!
I also got the aubrey organics one and first I loved it. Because it really seemed to help moisturize and heal pimples and reduce blackheads.
But at the same time I also got so many new little bumps, mainly on my cheeks (that are usually clear), jawline an under my chin – not very visible, but I can feel them, and they are bit itchy and some are like itchy pimples. As I tried the whole routine with honey face wash, aloe at night and a bit of jojoba during the day, I first thought the bumps are from the honey, as I have strong hayfever, so I stopped using it.
Then I thought it might be the jojoba oil. But now I feel like it could be the great aloe juice, which is quite sad, because it seemed to work so well at first. I´m a bit confused now, because it´s hard to tell what it is. I read that some people are allergic to aloe vera, so it´s absolutely possible.
Weeelll… I have no idea which one it is either :/ The only way you can really know is go on an elimination diet with your skin care
I´m now almost 100% sure that it was the aloe vera..since I stopped using it the bumps started to disappear and heal and the itchyness is also gone. I´m still using a bit of jojoba oil to moisturize on my t-zone which seems to work fine while I leave my cheeks alone, they seem to be happier without anything. But I´m still happy I tried the aloe as I start to understand my skin better and what it really needs. Reading your blog already helped me improve my skin so much within 5 weeks, I have to say.
That’s awesome! I’m so happy to hear that 🙂
And it’s good to know that aloe doesn’t work well for some people!

Hi Tracy–
I just bought the Lily of the Valley Aloe Vera that you used before the Aubrey brand…did you ever find that when you use the gel over your skin that it gets foamy or ends up looking like lotion for a brief second before you rub it in all the way? I’m not sure if I’m explaining this very well… the expiration date is fine and i haven’t had any negative reactions to it besides it drying out the area around my chin… but you did mention that aloe vera can be drying. I also have the Aubrey brand and love it! I just wanted a gel version—mostly because I’m lazy and it’s easier for me to apply. 🙂
Hi Jane!
Hmm no I don’t recall it ever getting foamy. I don’t know what’s with that! And yeah I know what you mean – the gel is a lot easier to apply!!
Hi! I’ve just tried it for the first time and my skin feels a bit tight but it’s a nice change because my skin is incredibly oil most of the time! Question: Do you think it’s ok to keep it without being refrigerated? because I’m going away on a road trip soon and I won’t be able to keep it “cool” in the fridge during that time… will also be in a very hot climate so I don’t know if that’ll worsen the aloe vera… what do you think? (or what would you do?) cheers!
Hi Zizi.. hmm.. I’d probably take it with me and take the chance
Good Morning,
I know this is an older post..but for the past 6 months I have been trying your regimen..Loving it so far!! I just get hooked on ingredients and WHY..I purchased in the beginning a small bottle of Aloe Life Gel..Which has vitamin A, C, E, and herbs..I noticed not all include the vitamin A..I’m wondering if it really makes a difference. Have you heard of this brand. Can you recommend something that is close. I may just order the Aubrey.
Thank You
Hi Trish,
the Aubrey gel is great, I’m using this one as well! I can only recommend it! It’s pure and doesn’t contain any chemical preservatives, which is amazing. It contains vitamin E only, and that’s just great for your skin! It’s also a natural preservative which prevents the aloe vera gel from going bad.
Vitamin C in cosmetics is completely useless, since it simply evaporates from the bottle as soon as you open it. Vitamin A in itself is good, but it can make your skin a little more sun-sensitive.
Hey Tracy!
Been following your blog and decided to do the caveman method. Been going on it for 2.5 weeks now. Also, have been doing a fruits and vegetable cleanse for the last two weeks. About a week ago my forehead just completely broke out like I have never seen before. Its slightly gotten better but it just hurts soooo badly today. I splurged and bought some manuka honey and the aubrey aloe you recommend. Just want anything to soothe it. Yet I am nervous about putting water on it or using the honey or the aloe in fear it may make things worse. Seems like putting water on it or what have you could make things worse. What would you suggest? Is it possible this is still a healing reaction even though it has been going for a week now? Or is it possible I am feeding candida with all the sugars from the fruits and making my skin go crazy?
Hi Mareshah,
Tracy is without internet access at the moment, so it’s me answering…
It’s definitely possible that it’s still a healing reaction. So you could either stick it out, or break the regimen and stick to a very minimal natural skincare routine (= manuka honey / aloe vera gel). It’s a very personal decision and nobody can predict how the outcome will be in the end. I do not think that manuka honey will make your skin worse (it has the ability to kill off bacteria), but some people are still going through a healing crisis when starting to wash their face with it. Aloe vera will probably just be soothing and healing (as long as you are not allergic to it – make a patch test first!). So well, it’s difficult to give you a suggestion of what will work for you for sure. In your case I don’t think that it’s candida though…
Hello Svea!
Thank you for the quick response! Is there a specific reason why you think I don’t have Candida by what I said? I use to be on birth control and before that I never had acne. Tried to get off a few years ago and broke out really badly. This time it has been a few months. before I did my cleanse I had some acne on my forehead a few on both cheeks by my nose and a couple on my chin. It was not until 1 week into my fast after my face had healed a little that I completely break out on my forehead. What would you recommend to dietary wise? Do you think Estroblock would be sufficient to help clear this up? I know it is just your opinion but it really would be very helpful. Thank you so much for your time!
With gratitude,
Mareshah
Hi Mareshah,
it really sounds like some kind of detox reaction due to your fast, plus being 2,5 weeks into the caveman regimen: it’s a typical time for breakouts and that makes me think that it’s probably not candida. As soon as you start eating regularly again eat a balanced whole foods diet that doesn’t exclude any specific type of food group – maybe just dairy or gluten grains if you are sensitive to them. Try to eat organic whenever possible, especially animal based products. You won’t want to eat additional hormones and toxins!
Estroblock works for some, for others it doesn’t. Personally I’m not into supplements and would eat broccoli sprouts instead as a natural whole food source of DIM. Antioxidants in food work synergistically, which means combined nutrients in food are much more powerful than any isolated substance and have far less side effects. But if you decide to take the supplement, make sure to take a liver supplement as well like milk thistle or burdock root, or you’ll experience an even stronger detox reaction!
Physical activity is definitely the best healing elixir not only for the skin, but for your whole body, and you can get it all for free! Plus vitamin D from the sun!
Hello everyone,
I have suffered from acne since 20 years, and have gone through hell, have taken antibiotics, accutane, differin gel, creams etc etc nothing worked except homeopathy, however even with that I do suffer from an outburst of acne during my periods.
Just 2 months ago, I bought aloe vera plant for my garden, googled and found that it’s suppose to be good for acne, decided to make a toner with the following ingredients…
Manuka honey
Organic green tea
Little bit of organic apple cider vinegar
And aloe gel from my plant
I put it in the fridge, I make just the amount to last me for 10 days, and believe me it’s worked miracles for my skin (which is super oily) my skin glows, have had compliments from my colleagues. Am soooo happy. I don’t follow any particular diet but I have stopped taking medicines or supplements even homeopathy because I believe my body needs a break from all of this.
Just wanted to share this with u guys.
Hello! Just reading this.. What exactly do you do with the toner? Let it sink into your skin? or wash it off? I’m asking because I was wondering – wouldn’t the honey make it sticky? Please elaborate! Would like to know more about it! Would be great if you mention the quantities of each ingredient used as well 🙂
I just got the lily of the valley bottle for my old spots but did you wash it off with water in the morning or leave it on?
Im interested in purchasing it but i noticed that there are two types of bottle from aubrey organics? The one sold in vitaminshoppe online and the one you just linked from amazon. Well those two bottles state that they are pure aloe vera and basically everything is the same. Could it be that former is the old packaging?
Yeah they probably just updated the packaging 🙂
I was reading reviews and ppl said ingredients have changed, would you still recommend? Wanting to mix it with msm
Hi Tama, I’ve since found other aloe veras that are as good quality and also have a little bit of thickener in them, which personally I like a lot better because it’s just so much easier to use. The fact that Aubrey’s was so watery definitely made it difficult to work with. I don’t know if their ingredients have changed or not. Look for Art Naturals, or Green Leaf Naturals, both are good.
Thank you Tracy!
