In this video, I give suggestions on natural, chemical free body wash, shaving cream, toothpaste, and deoderant!
If we want to clear our acne, it`s important to reduce all chemicals and toxins coming into our bodies, and this includes hygiene products that get absorbed into your skin. So make sure you are reducing your products or switching to more natural, chemical free options.
Watch the video to find out what I use and suggest!

Have you ever thought about how many chemicals are contained in every day hygiene products? Will you switch to more natural items?

I used to have a tiny bit of bacne so I got the Neutrogena pink grapefruit body wash and after like 2 weeks of using it I got a breakout of multiple zits on my shoulders so I stopped using it and my bacne is much better now. I occasionally exfoliate with a waschloth and that’s it. I only have 1 small (healing) zit right now. I basically use body wash on armpits and feet only.
I use flouride free Toms of Maine toothpaste. I don’t really think it has made a difference in my around the mouth zits though.
Deodorant: I use regular Dove but hardly ever use it as I don’t sweat much so it’s not really on my mind.
Shaving cream: I use regular stuff as well but I’m super super lazy about shaving and do my armpits like every 2 weeks, legs only when I wear shorts. yeah lol
oh one more thing…I switched to a sulfate free shampoo (L’Oreal something and Organix) a couple months ago and my hair is much less greasy now!! I used to have visible hair grease after 2 days but now I can go 3 days and it only looks a little dirty.
Thanks for the reply, Lily! That’s really cool to hear that your hair is going well with the sulfate free shampoo!
Damn, I’m going to try finding the bottle of this normal old shower gel I got at Costco. It looks really typical and you would expect it to be loaded with chemicals but after reading the ingredients I was very surprised to find that it was a lot of good stuff like oils and plant-derived ingredients or stuff that’s a much better alternative to all the sulfates.
Toms of Maine has sulfates too I think but Trader Joe’s carries their own brand of toothpaste that’s like peppermint and baking soda which is about as chemical-free as you’re gonna get. They also have a nasty licorice-tasting variety though that I would definitely not recommend because your breath will smell like Twizzlers for the rest of the day. I think TJ also has one with peppermint, baking soda AND flouride so if you can get the one that’s just regular baking soda and peppermint that would be ideal.
I also heard that eating sulfates/sulfites (usually in stuff like dried fruits and non-organic sausages and links) gives you an unpleasant body odor.
I hope my pheromones bag me a hottie.
Haha that’s interesting…I’ve never heard that. I actually try to avoid sulfites because that was one of my sensitivities when I got tested… maybe that’s why I smell like roses 😉
random question — i was wondering how you actually washed your face. do you use a towel or just take a shower and that’s it? I usually just take a shower and leave my face as it is (minimize touching) but recently I’ve began using a face towel for non inflamed areas like my nose to clean it up (the small whiteheads)
I usually just splash my face with luke warm water, then rub some honey into it for a minute or two, rinse it off with my hands and then dry my face with a towel (patting it dry, not rubbing). I usually think that wash clothes are too harsh, but yes… it’s okay if you are using it in a non inflamed area that doesn’t seem to flare up! But anywhere you’re inlamed acne prone, I’d probably avoid it.
thanks. i’m definitely going to take the advice about rubbing because this morning I found the side of my nose like all red. I think i rubbed some skin off. lol …
Can you use dr. bronners all in one soaps on your face as well? it has really been convenient to use as a shampoo/body wash for me and suds up really well. Also, I have noticed that dr bronners magic soap really cleared up all the back acne I would randomly get. Think its safe to use on the face too?
Oh thats cool that it’s helped your back acne! I’ve never used it on my face, but it might be okay… I’d recommend diluting it a lot though, because dr bronner’s is very strong concentration and will be drying if used in full strength on delicate skin like the face. The skin on your back is a lot more tough and can handle more!
I just read this post and although it is an older post I am going to comment because I think I have some useful information for those looking for natural deodorant. I have always had trouble finding a deodorant I like. When buying commercial brand products I would usually buy them based on how they smelt however when I would actually wear them I would get a really strange not so lovely smell. Basically I was buying deodorant to prevent smelling and ended up smelling worse than I would have with nothing on. That being said I am not brave enough to go without deodorant as I do sweat quite a bit and I just like the comfort of knowing I am protected. On top of smelling disgusting I would also get really bad white stains on my clothing which sometimes would take several washes to come out! If you didn’t realize this when putting the clothes on it could be embarassing later. Anyways, I was recently informed of the website skindeep which rates products based on several hazards including how toxic they are, whether they are carcinogenic, etc. There I found a deodorant that had a perfect rating of zero. There was absolutely no risk. It is called a crystal deodorant stone. It is composed of mineral salts and is applied by wetting the stone and then rubbing it under your arms the same way you would commercial deodorant. This is the most amazing product, not only do I know smell awful from my own scents I don’t smell from the deodorant either. I have absolutely no scent and NO staining on my clothes which in turn will make these items last longer as i do not need to wash them as frequently. The deodorant cost me $4.00, I’ve used it for about 3 months and you can’t tell I have used any. This thing will probably last close to a year and as I said at the price of $4.00 it is definitly worth the cost. I thought this information would be useful for those people like me who want to use natural products but still have the reassurance or feeling that you are protected if you do sweat a lot! Hope this is hopeful to someone! I’ve never been more pleased with a product so highly recommend it. It can be purchased in most Health Food stores!
Oh yeah! I’ve heard of the crystal deoderant… thanks for sharing 🙂
Does the crystal deodorant minimize sweating? I recently heard of lifestinks deodorant and they are supposed to help keep sweating to a minimum but are all natural, but I have yet to try it, heres their website http://www.duggansisters.com/findus/findus.php
soapnuts can be a really good option for guys who want to switch to natural shaving creams, they are used in ayurveda since thousands of years…they are dirt cheap and multi purpose..serve a good laundry purpose as well as house hold cleansing…plus good for skin too
Hey Tracy,
I was wondering what you recommend for Chapstick or lip balm? Maybe you have already made a post about this but I couldn’t find one. Thanks so much! I love your blogs
Hey Jackie, I used to not really use any which is probably why I didn’t include it in this video, but I do use a natural lip balm now… I have several of them all locally made (so couldn’t recommend a specific brand) and they contain essentially just beeswax and essential oils I think
