Hey friends 🙂
The following is an interview with the lovely Jill Therese of the website Heal Your Face with Food.
This is one in a series of short interviews with peeps who have cleared their skin naturally & holistically to find out what worked for them and what didn’t!
These are posted every other week, and if you have cleared your skin naturally and want to fill out your own interview to be featured on The Love Vitamin, then just click here!
What was your experience with acne? How many years did you have it and how did it make you feel?
I had acne for almost 15 years. It made me feel so frustrated, embarrassed, ashamed…..
I was constantly insecure about my skin and how it looked and I was always so annoyed that I couldn’t seem to fix it.
What kinds of things did you try prior to holistic healing that didn’t work?
I tried:
Benzoyl peroxide, Proactiv, basically anything over the counter for acne.
Differin gel, retin-A, retin-A micro, monocycline, dioxycline, tetracycline and 3 types of birth control pills.
Tea tree oil, st. johns water, vitamin B….. hahah maybe more but can’t quite remember them all!
How did you discover that acne could be treated holistically?
I had started to study to become a fitness instructor and I was learning SO much about the body/mind/skin connection.
During that time I was also doing a ton of research on my skin and came across Kris Carr’s book, Crazy Sexy Diet. It basically changed my life- seeing how someone had gone on a crusade to help themselves heal holistically was like a light bulb going off in my head.
What were the specific things that made the biggest difference to your skin? What worked for you?
I changed up my diet dramatically- I removed sugar and basically anything that came from a box.
I find sugar to be one of the biggest acne offenders- if I have a “naughty” weekend- I find that I’ll have a little break out here and there from it.
Were there any obstacles? Things you found difficult about the whole process?
To be honest….. not really? I was so, so determined that I felt like nothing could stop me! (I was also so tired of dealing with it for 15 years that I was just DONE)
How did you feel once your skin cleared up?
Powerful, confident, in control. Beautiful again. Happy:)

Hi Tracy
Great article and great blog, thanks!:)
I just read a book with the same approach: to get healthy thanks to food. It’s called “Eat. Nourish. Glow” by Amanda Greer, a nutritional therapist and healthy eating expert. It’s a beautiful book, it’s fun and easy to read, has recipes and it will give you tons of ideas of good ways to eat.
She mentions acne and how her skin cleared after she quit sugar and dairy and gives advice on how to detox your kitchen, among many other things…
Check it out, it’s really worth it!
I quit sugar and dairy after seeing a naturopath and after reading this book, about two months ago and I really see a difference. Actually, I first started noticing a difference about a week after I quit; it was incredible.
After reading your ebook, I recently bought a food supplement with a mixture of burdock, milk thisle and vitex; we’ll see what happens! I have hormonal acne and I’m almost clear… but not quite yet. I hope this will make a difference!
Hey Emma, that’s awesome to hear things are moving forward! Dairy and sugar really are huge when it comes to acne! Glad you discovered that and removing them has made such a difference. Hope the supplements work out 🙂
Hi Tracy!
I’ll let you know! I live in France so some of the brands you mention are not available here (and I don’t really trust Amazon…) so I found the equivalent in health food stores.
Thanks again for all your useful advice! 🙂
I know this is an old post but wanted to comment anyway. Jill you look great and I enjoyed your story. Kris Carr is awesome…I have followed her for years. Even though I am not vegetarian (I was for over 30 years, but not anymore) I just love her whole message. So happy for you…clear skin feels great. Like you, I cleared my skin by changing my diet. For me, it’s dairy, sugar and also most grains.
