Candida overgrowth is a hot topic when it comes to the natural health field. What is candida? Do you have it? Is it causing your acne? Is it something you should worry about?
Watch the video below to find out what it is, and what I think about the whole matter!

First off, this website is a godsend! I’ve always been aware of holistic medicine and grew up on organic food, and have tried my hardest to not eat processed foods. But being an (ex-junk food) vegetarian, and being in college, I havent exactly followed my own philosophy. But! This has brought me back.
I have a question about candida cleansing though – I read on websites that even if you have a little bit of sugar “you’re back to square one.” Is that really true? I have essentially cut out sugar. In the past few days, the only sugar I had was honey in my tea (and fruits of course). I suppose my question is – if I have a bit of soy, a bit of gluten, or a bit of sugar, is that going to so to say, “ruin” everything? If i could cook for myself, it would be much easier.
Also, recipes would be awesome! Thank you so much for sharing all you know 🙂
Hi Kate! Thanks!
Anyway… to answer your question… I’m not entirely sure in the case of people with severe fungal candida overgrowths (which is not most people) if eating a tiny bit of sugar will send you all the way back to square one. In general though…. absolutely not!! This is a great question… I’m going to do a video about it sometime this week.
If I had to guess, I’d say that if a person genuinely had an overgrowth of candida, after it’s put back under control and the good bacteria in the body flourish, it’s not necessary to remain on an anti-candida type diet. As long as you don’t consume buckets of sugar and carbs, I would imagine it would be kept in check naturally by your body and shouldn’t be a problem thereafter.
I’ve definitely had success with an anti-candida diet. My family is East European so we probably eat a ratio of like 250% Carbs to 40% Protein and 30% Fat on one day and on the next 250% Protein to 50% Fat to 30% Carbs. I guess mom’s cooking isn’t always the best for you. 😛
Haha I spent a couple months in Hungary in 2008/9, and I know what you mean! Lots of white bread and sausages.
[..YouTube..] can you tell us in detail what you ate and what you avoided on ths candida diet?do you have a sample diet? maybe on your blog?
My skin problems are candida, my doctor did a blood test (for sinus aches I had) and apparently I have too much mold in the blood. I tried eating fruit, many vegetables and fat, and sometimes a bit of fish, but it didn’t work that well (it worked, but very slowly). Then I decided to go 0 carb by eating 1 kilo of broccoli, many eggs, a lot of meat and a lot of pumpkin seeds or chia seeds, and there is much more improvement.
It is also important to think about food combining though. Fat takes the longest to digest, and it creates a coating in your stomach and thus prevents stomach acid to flow correctly (which makes it harder to digest meat). Don’t eat fats with protein. Don’t mix starches with meat (I don’t eat starches anyways). In general, eating animal protein in the morning and at lunch and eating seeds or nuts or other natural protein sources (or fats eventually, like avocados or olives) at dinner is the best way to go. Don’t forget to add 1 clove of garlic to each meal and you’re good to go.
An important thing to realize is that food intolerances are often caused by candida. Going to a naturopath to test for allergies isn’t bad, but it’s unnecessary. Just use anti-fungal foods, eat tons of veggies, and the intolerances will go away. I though I was intolerant to everything until I found out all those things were high in the glycemic index.
What did you eat on your diet, actually? I’m starving here, only eating eggs and meat and veggies, but my parents don’t want me to eat more than 2 eggs and 200g of meat/fish a day…
I can’t do a proper candida diet like that 😛
Well… it was a long time ago, so I don’t remember exactly what I ate… I remember eating a lot of ground beef, brown rice… and… vegetables? It wasn’t that much fun hahaha.
It’s funny you ask, because I just went back to the naturopath the other day to get rechecked for allergies… luckily I don’t have too many, and all the stuff I was sensitive last year seems to have gone. But what I am sensitive now is all stuff that points to the idea I’m having a yeast issue…. I’m sensitive to baker’s yeast, mold, and fructose, all things associated with candida. So now I’m planning to go on another strict candida diet for a few weeks, but I haven’t decided yet how strict I’m going to be…. every candida diet plan allows different things. I’ll probably just eat non sugary vegetables, meat, and a bit of non sugary non gluten grains, like rice or quinoa. Booring buuut…. you’re right, I think that once I get the candida down, I’ll be able to eat fruit again and won’t be sensitive to it… although it’s probably a sign to keep it to less sugary fruits like berries.
I eat tons of eggs in the morning now, 200g meat / fish at noon and quinoa in the evening. I’m improving really really really fast. All thanks to your articles, the information on here, I cannot thank you enough. It’s unbelievable how my mild acne made me look real bad, I thought I was getting older and uglier, but apparently skin can really alter someone’s presence. Now I look better than I ever did in my life.
Oh, Idk if I told you, but don’t mix the protein with the carbohydrates. Don’t eat meat with rice for example, it causes forehead acne due to poor digestion. It’s always better to eat three separate meals with vegetables and protein/carbs/fat. I just don’t eat fruit anymore, and I love the taste of eggs way more now. I love it. Seriously, I used to crave sugar all the time, now I can’t stand it.
The whole mixing protein and starchy carbs thing is something I’ve always been really unsure about. On one hand, they say don’t mix them because it doesn’t digest properly, but then other people say you should mix them so that when you eat carbs, the protein and fat will prevent it from causing a blood sugar spike!
That’s wrong. Well yes, protein with the sugar will lower sugar spikes (I’m not even sure about that actually), but it will result in rotting in your body as the digestion doesn’t go well. To lower the blood sugar spike of a starchy meal, eat vegetables with it. Vegetables go together with everything (I usually eat a whole broccoli with my quinoa) but fruits.
Eat fruits on their own. I like to eat protein later in the day as it takes longer to digest than carbs.
Idk about you, but I can really sense high sugar spikes. I get really energetic, and then I get angry for no reason. It happened last time when eating 2 apples and exercising right after. I think I’m gonna keep doing this candida diet (= meat+vegetables and some quinoa) for a loooong time :D. Eggs are so yummy, and I’m in better shape than when I did raw vegan (raw vegan worked for me, but as soon as I ate meat I got problems, probably because of poor food combining though).
There’s a chart here : (at the bottom) http://www.detox.net.au/Food-Combining.htm
Tracy, I am looking to do a candida cleanse, I have a probiotic and am setting up a colonic soon. My question is, with your Candida cleanse ebook, does it include eating meat? I do not eat any type of meat or soy so I am not sure if all im supposed to eat is veggies and quinoa… lol
thanks
Hey Sweets,
Yes, it does contain meat. It’s tricky for vegetarians to do, but many, many have modified it to make it work
Since black and white fungus are good to our health …does eating black fungus or white fungus aggravate or contribute to the growth of candida???
